"Nothing Better to Do"

prevDec. 28, 2003 - 12:08 a.m.next

Marian and Betty were friends since early in school. In their late teens they would spend Sundays driving around town with their boyfriends; just something to do. Betty's sister Louise wanted to join them, but the girls said she could only come along if she had a boy too (Louise would later say she thought Marian and Betty were afraid she would steal one, if not both, of their boys). One day in particular, they passed by a drugstore where three of four boys were hanging out. Betty asked one of the boys, Warren, if he wanted to go riding with them for Louise.

"Sure. I don't have anything better to do."

Later that evening he asked Louise (whom he had actually known since childhood) if he could see her again the next night. She accepted. Monday night they drove around some more, ending up at The Forks to get some sandwiches and Bruswick stew.

Warren and Louise continued dating, and the first time he told her he loved her, she laughed in his face. It was quite some time before he said those words again, but when he did, she felt the same.

"When she laughed at me, I can't believe I didn't get into my Studebaker right then and drive away, leaving her behind." Granted, if he had, they never would have married, and my father would never have been born.

It's crazy to think about your grandparents when they were your age. Crazy to think about them dealing with love (and being laughed at for it). You see something that's lasted for so long and you just take it for granted that it's always been.
